Methodology

There are three intertwined components in the training offered to students by IQRA College, namely: knowledge acquisition, skill building and character moulding. The three components are delivered in such a way that they mutually reinforce one another. For example, while class lessons are taken from the curriculum, students choose to do a skill-building project relating to their class lessons. Every student undertakes to types of projects: personal and group. One is intended to inculcate the spirit of self-reliance in them, the other aims to foster the habits of leadership and cooperation. These attributes in turn help in their studies: they are able to do independent study and research while they are also able to teach and learn from one another.

The approach to training at IQRA College is dynamic. Teachers are trained and re-trained to improve the mastery of their subjects and methods of delivering them to students. Trainings hold regularly in-plant and off-plant, both nationally and internationally. As a matter of policy, teachers are made to participate in every marking coordination held by public examination bodies, namely: the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO). This keeps them abreast of the expectations of examiners in public examinations. This has been helpful as our students pass public examinations in flying colours.

We heavily leverage technology in delivering our training programs. Our plan to fully make our operations digital has commenced and is on course. This made it possible for us to move our teaching and learning activities online just one week after the lock down introduced in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. All subjects were taught online. Besides, our student portal enables us to interact with parents, guardians and students on their individual concerns. Our staff and students are able to adroitly use such IT tools as:

  • Open board
  • Google classroom
  • Google meet
  • Zoom

As part of our digitalisation process, our students no longer write notes in class but have such notes produced and distributed to them. This saves time which is then invested in individual personal study. The next stage of the process is that each student will own a tablet will all relevant study materials pre-loaded.

Curriculum

The curriculum issued by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Education and as may be reviewed from time to time is wholly adopted and fully implemented in our College at both junior and senior secondary levels. Consequently, we register our students in the exit classes at the two levels respectively for the following certificate examinations:

  1. Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) – in two versions; one organized by the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the other by the Kwara State Ministry of Education.
  2. Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) – in two versions; one organized by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the other by the National Examinations Council (NECO)

Because of our dual mandate to teach both Western and Islamic education to our students, adding the following further enriches the national curriculum on education:

  1. Qur’an memorization
  2. Arabic language (conversational)
  3. Fiqh

While both Qur’an memorization and Conversational Arabic are taught to both day and boarding students during weekdays, boarders learn the two subjects more intensely along with fiqh while attending the weekend madrasah.

E-learning

To quicken and broaden access to knowledge, we train our students to be savvy in the use of ICT. We have a computer lab in addition to an internet café. Students are issued with tickets to enable them browse the internet under supervision to prevent abuse.
